Electric Bike Batteries: What you need to Know!

Electric cars, electric bikes, EVs, electric, electric, electric! I am sure you have heard these terms as they are now the usual talking points of tech industry giants and the narrative of governments for a more sustainable, and most importantly, an environmentally friendly future. As we are at the cusp of an electric revolution, and at same time far from it since the transport and energy sector still primarily runs and relies on fossil fuels, it is the one of the fastest growing sectors for renewable, clean and sustainable energy. But today we are not here to talk about the industry but to the one very near and dear to us, and our fellow readers, who are all about Electric Bikes! And for this one today is all about the most important part of an electric bike, its battery!  

Here are things you need to know about electric bike batteries. 

What is E-Bike batteries made of? 

Lithium-ion! And we all have one of those. Otherwise, you would not be able to power up the device you are using to read this blog! Many of the original E-Bikes used to have lead acid batteries, which were cheap but extremely heavy as well as taking too long to charge. Due to rapid advancements in battery technology, these were replaced with lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries consist of single or multiple ion cells as all parts of a protective circuit board. Now what is an ion cell? We would have to delve deep into the science of how these are made, and function and we are not here to learn about that.  But we should know that Lithium-ion batteries are rechargeable, have high energy efficiency, long life and the technology for this has improved drastically to a point where they are in almost all electronic portable devices today. Without itsexistence we would not have electric bikes!  

Are E-Bike Batteries Dangerous? 

There have been some very devastating cases around the world especially in the electric bike industry which has led to death and fatal injury. The electric bike industry in recent times have doubled down on protection standards and components used with many electric battery suppliers either being shut down or blacklisted from countries where cases have arisen leading to death and safety concerns reported by users. The regulation for the electric bike industry has become very strict with tighter controls on electric bike companies that get reported to relevant authorities. One thing to stay away is from E-Bike conversion kits that turn your everyday bike to an ebike, as this sector is still highly unregulated with plenty of untested kits arriving to the market from the far east.  Which is why if you are looking for an E-Bike, turn to a reputed brand. Don’t try to convert your 10-year-old mechanical bicycle to an electric bike, leave that to the experts.  

E-Bike batteries can be dangerous or malfunction due to overcharging or over-discharging. A substandard battery management system in combination of incompatible chargers can lead to malfunctions and fire risks.  

Malfunctions could also be triggered by penetration of a battery with an external object or extreme impact, Other malfunctions could be due to overheating or extreme cold exposure that could cause water residue to build up especially in minus degree temperatures if batteries have been kept in cold storage for too long. E-Bike companies often lay out the battery and charger dos and don’ts clearly to make sure users are aware of this so always READ the manuals or any paperwork associated to such components.  

Other outliers that can cause battery malfunctions or fuses could be exposure of external objects at entry points of a battery that should not come in contact such as insertion of a key in the charging port. This is still quite common today due to humane errors, but battery brands have built in mechanisms to mitigate such accidents inside the battery.  

What kind of E-Bike battery should I go for? 

Well, the first step is to learn about and get an understanding of the basics regarding battery packs, then determine what you need and what you can afford. The last thing you ever want to deal with, is being far from home and suddenly losing power! Going out for a ride with confidence, knowing that you will have a great time, enjoying the ride, the sights and sounds and then getting home without any stress is the ultimate goal and will result in you wanting to do it over and over again. Every day. “Ebiking” is a way of life for some of us, equipment failures and getting stranded far from home, not on my list, at any price! 

Range, how far can you go on a full charge? Well, ladies and gentlemen, my personal number one pet peeve, Range Estimates! Every company, website and salesperson struggle with this, on one side you have the desire to claim the best-case scenario as it makes the best sales pitch, but on the flip side, if it looks too good to be true, it usually is. Fact is this, expect typically 20 miles / 32 Km from an average 6 to 8 Lb Lithium battery, that is the universal truth and pretty much the most honest statement a company can make. 

More range and less weight are not possible in real life, until battery tech improves significantly, those are the realities, for everyone. 6 to 8 lbs for 20 miles of no-pedal range at 20 mph. No matter what battery pack and who sells it, get the real weight and base your range on that information. 

Those who claim ” 100 miles on a single charge ” either have a 40 Lb ($$$$$) battery, or they intend you to pedal for 80 miles, then turn on the power for another 20… If any battery pack could deliver 100 miles of no-pedal range on a single charge and weigh less than 10 lbs, gasoline would cost much less. On some E-bikes equipped with pedal sensors and no throttle at the handlebars, that require you to pedal for power to flow, range estimates can be true at very low power settings. However, given the rider is pedaling and providing human power, this is not no-pedal range and makes a significant difference. 

If your ebike has a handlebar throttle, that allows the motor to run without pedaling, power consumption is much greater. It’s important to understand how your ebike works, a 500w kit does not use exactly 500w, all of the time. If you pedal without using power, your battery remains fully charged until you use it, it is entirely possible to ride a whole day on a charge by using it sparingly. Most people ride with the throttle firmly pinned to ” max ” and in this fashion, expect 20 miles from a 6 to 8 lb battery in one hour before you run out of power on most bikes. (*insert fine print here) 

What are the types of E-Bike batteries? 

There are many types of E-Bike batteries that perform a certain way such as external removable batteries that you can find typically installed on the rear or the mid frame of the bike. These can be removed and charged or charged when on the bike. There are also E-Bike batteries that are integrated inside the frame and mostly apply to foldable E-Bikes where the frame opens up to insert the battery. The most modern E-Bikes have batteries built in the seat post but due to the size limitations of that component, they are not as powerful as the big bulky batteries you see on most E-Bikes but they are highly efficient for certain types of light weight E-Bikes like the Hygge Virum, or the Estarli models.  

How long does it take to charge E-Bike Batteries?

Your battery can be charged while it’s still attached to the bike for sake of ease. You can also remove your battery from its mount and charge it in a wall outlet. This method allows you to swap out your dead battery for a fully charged one. A lithium-ion battery takes anywhere from 4 to 6 hours to charge fully. It’s recommended that you allow your E-Bike batteries to charge fully before use. Partially charging it more often than not can affect your battery life in the long term. 

Most E-Bike batteries operate as smart batteries. The power cell has a built-in management system that prevents under or overcharging. Thanks to this intelligent system, leaving your battery charging overnight won’t cause any damage to your battery. It’s really inexpensive to charge your E-Bike batteries. It costs about 8 cents to charge it in your wall outlet.  

How to maintain an E-Bike Battery?  

The best way to maintain an E-Bike battery is quite simple. One is to make sure that you have read the specific guidelines set out by E-Bike brands covering battery care. Most if not all E-Bike brands do and should provide this in the manuals along with safety instructions. E-Bike batteries come in different shapes and sizes, some could be external and exposed batteries with slots on the frame to insert or some can be with internal batteries for insertion inside the frame. You may think, as it is a battery that avoids water, it is your biggest concern but infecting the batteries these days on modern E-Bikes are the safest components when it comes to water contact. It is usually the controller, LCD and motor that are least resistant to water damage. Once up and running with a new battery, store it or your bike in a space heated to between 40- and 70-degrees Fahrenheit. Avoid charging the battery to full capacity if you don’t plan to ride it immediately, which helps maintain its efficiency and longevity.

Those are well known and well sough after batteries that people tend to gravitate and trust but other brands like other upcoming Chinese brands like Tianneng, Benzo, Tritek and TLH are making waves and capturing a large audience of E-Bike manufacturers who opt for these batteries due to price to performance advantages. Your E-Bike battery is the most important and crucial component of your E-Bike and consumers or newcomers should educate themselves on their capabilities, maintenance and safety measures thoroughly to ensure they make the right choice on their commuting investment.
